Welcome back loyal legions of T-Boners. Riiiiiiiiiiiiggggggghhhhhhhht. It's been awhile since I did a movie review. Looking back, I've got WAY too many movies to comment on all of them. So I will do my best to only comment on those that you might have some inclination of watching sometime soon. Here goes...
I'll start with a positive and say that Cinderella Man is a
I'll stay positive with The Exorcism of Emily Rose. This is not just another Exorcist in that it has a girl climbing the walls, vomiting pea soup across the room, and her head doing a 360 while speaking in tongues. Rather, this movie takes place more in a courtroom than anything. Sure, it has some scary parts, but nothing too dramatic. This is also inspired by a true story. I'd say for anyone remotely interested in exorcisms or the power of evil OR people who like courtroom style movies, this is a movie for you. I really enjoyed it.
On the other hand, Deuce Bigalow, European Gigalo is a waste of time. A lot of recycled humor from the first one. It is more crass than anything and it was just too immature for me to enjoy. Zero value and I wish I had that hour and a half back.
Speaking of crass movies, The Forty
amongst the characters, as well. If you like "The Office", Anchorman, or Wedding Crashers, this is your kind of movie.
I also watched Dukes of Hazzard against my better judgement. It had a few funny parts, but they were few and far between. It had moments of total randomness (pot calling the kettle black here) that just really had no place in the movie. I'd say pass on this one unless your only goal is to see Jessica Simpson in a bikini and a couple of other hot topless chicks.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is one I've already commented on a bit. If you are a fan of the movies so far, this is the best one yet. It's been said that this is the "darkest" one of all. This is true. And it will continue in that trend from here on out if they follow the books. The new director for this one did an outstanding job of fitting in the pertinent material and keeping it all in the time frame. I have read the books so I know the meaning of everything they showed. I'm curious to the non-readers of this series to see what you may have missed and been confused about.
It was time to pay my dues when I had to watch The Wedding Date. For a chick flick, this movie was not that bad. Debra Messing is really cute and has potential to reach Jennifer Aniston status. Now that I think about that, they do have a connection in Along Came Polly (anyone for scuba?). Predictable, but it has its funny parts. Guys, if you are forced to watch a chick flick, this one is completely bearable.
Robots was totally annoying.
The Island was pretty good. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan. But when a good one comes along, I'll give it it's due. It was nicely done, as Michael Bay normally does. The concept is pretty good, as well. If you can't find anything better to watch amongst the new releases, go with this one.
I was warned about High Tension, but I think for the wrong reason. I was warned that the ending would ruin it for me. I don't really have a problem with the ending. I actually like the movie overall. What bothered me was that I didn't realize the movie was dubbed from French to English. I restarted the movie 3 times thinking the sound was off from the picture. If they are going to dub it from French to English, why bother giving her a French accent? True, it takes place in France, I'll give you that. But the accent was terrible and rather annoying. That is my Debbie Downer comment on the movie. I'll accept the ending though.
The Woodsman with Kevin Bacon is one that I've contemplated renting for months now. It's been on the New Releases rack for a long time and I finally broke down and watched it. I wish I hadn't. Bacon plays a child molester recently released from prison. He's struggling to find his place in the world while also fighting his temptations (he's one sick dude). This one was boring and I don't recommend it to anyone.
Here are some quickie comments:
Better Off Dead: It's a classic. "I want my 2 DOLLARS!" Young Guns: Another classic. Good western with a different twist. "Regulators....Mount up." The Babysitter: Alicia Silverstone as a babysitter that the townfolk fantasize about. Weird. I wouldn't recomment it, but it's up to you. XXX: Not a porn, the one with Vin Diesel. Actually, pretty good, despite the 007'ish cheesy one liners. The 'Burbs: Tom Hanks before the prestigious roles. Pretty funny, but strange, too. Freddy vs Jason: Not so much a horror movie. Freddie makes it more a comedy. Good if you are a fan of both and don't carry high expectations.
I cut several movies out. The one recommendation I have since it is Christmas is A Christmas Story. You'll be able to find it on TV this weekend all day long on one of the cable channels (TNT or TBS, I forget which one). Let me know how you feel about some of these movies, whether you agree or disagree. I'd love to know.
'Til then, a Very Merry Christmas from...
